Peak Start- How to Begin on a High note

I have noted over the years how the way you start your day has an impact on your level of productivity in that day. Your energy levels too will highly likely be affected because of the state in which you put your mind as you begin your day.

Following the steps of some of the people who inspire me, I have picked a few lessons that I have seen work extremely well in setting the right tone to your day. A good question to ask at this point is what are the first things you do when you wake up? In the information age; where social media has become a part of our lives, a lot of us tend to do the following immediately we wake up:

  • We go on social media: facebook, twitter
  • We check messages: emails, sms’s, whatsapp

From my experience, as opposed to doing things like reading a book, meditating, prayer etc, going straight to social media or messages doesn’t set you in the most productive tone. Social media and just a flood of information in general can easily tire you mentally. You will see tremendous change in your energy levels if you avoid going straight to these platforms after waking up.

Try it tomorrow and see the difference that this will make. Discipline yourself and don’t check your messages or log in to your social media account the first hour or two after you wake up.

Here is another important aspect; don’t simply decide that you won’t check your messages or go to social media as the first thing. Decide what you will do. Not only what you will not do. Generally, when we just stop something without finding a replacement, we can easily slip into old habits.

So, I can decide that the first thing I will do every morning, among other things is read a chapter of a book that inspires me. Having said that, make a list of three things that you will do first when you wake up tomorrow.

  1. …………………………………………..
  2. …………………………………………..
  3. …………………………………………..

Switch off your busy gadgets if possible (and it is).
